The Fifth Quarter is Romney Marsh, as defined by the Revd Richard Harris Barham in The Ingoldsby Legends: ‘The World, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Romney Marsh.’ It is a place apart, almost another world. This collection of stories and poems explores its ancient and modern landscapes, wonders at its past, and reflects upon its present. Richard Selby has known Romney Marsh all his life. His writing reflects the uniqueness of The Marsh through prose, poetry, and written versions of stories he performs as a storyteller.
